Anthropic Backers Ride $2 Trillion Valuation Wave
Early and late-stage investors in the AI lab are poised for massive gains as the company prepares for a potential public listing this year.

A potential $2 trillion valuation looms on the horizon for Anthropic, a figure that would represent a historic windfall for the venture capital firms and individual investors who backed the artificial intelligence pioneer. As the company moves toward an initial public offering expected within the current calendar year, the financial stakes for its backers have never been higher. Even before the public debut, the private market valuation of $965 billion has already transformed early bets into multi-billion dollar holdings, signaling a significant shift in the wealth distribution of the tech sector's leading edge.
The trajectory of Anthropic's valuation has been nothing short of vertical. The most striking evidence of this growth is found in the portfolios of its earliest supporters. According to data from Bloomberg, these investors are now sitting on stakes that total billions of dollars, a testament to the rapid appreciation of the company’s equity since its inception. This surge in value underscores the high-risk, high-reward nature of investing in foundational AI infrastructure, where early entry points at lower valuations have yielded exponential returns in a matter of years.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, exemplifies this early-stage success. His participation in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 occurred when the startup was valued at just $461 million, according to PitchBook records. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is valued at nearly $10 billion, a figure that highlights the immense leverage provided by investing at the pre-revenue or early-revenue stage of an AI lab's development.
Later-stage investors have also seen substantial gains, though their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive late-stage bet has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value once the company completes its IPO, further cementing the firm's position in the high-growth tech portfolio.
Menlo Ventures, which led the company's Series D financing, has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia entered the market earlier this year with a $3 billion investment when Anthropic was valued at $380 billion. This move secured approximately 1% ownership for Sequoia, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial outlay, a rare feat for a late-cycle investment in the tech sector.
The gains are not limited to traditional venture capital firms. Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, the firm has funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the firm's financial position in Anthropic remains robust.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This dramatic appreciation illustrates the compounding effect of holding equity in a company that has scaled rapidly while maintaining high demand from investors.
While the current private valuations are impressive, several open questions remain regarding the final outcome of the IPO. The potential doubling of stakes for late-stage investors like Iconiq depends on market sentiment at the time of the listing. Furthermore, the transition from a private entity to a public one will subject these massive holdings to greater liquidity and volatility. For now, the numbers suggest that the early and mid-cycle backers of Anthropic are set to secure some of the most significant financial gains in recent tech history.
